Physiology of Meditation

April 4, 2008 – 12:09 am

In order to understand how meditation helps improve physical health, first we must understand stress. Stress can be defined as a state resulting from interaction between a person and their environment which leads the person to perceive a discrepancy, whether it exists or not, between the demands of a situation and our ability to meet those demands. What are binaural beats?

March 30, 2008 – 12:38 am

If you haven’t heard of binaural beats before, the basic idea is as follows. Your brain waves have frequencies that they go through during the day. Gamma waves are associated with higher mental activity, problem solving, and fear. Beta waves are associated with anxiety, arousal, and busy thinking. Alpha waves are associated with waking relaxation, pre-sleep, and drowsiness. Theta waves are associated with dreams, deep meditation, and REM sleep. Delta waves are associated with deep dreamless sleep, and loss of body awareness. Binaural beats are beats of two different frequencies that are played separately in each ear. Since the two beats are different, the brain tries to make up the difference by creating a frequency of brainwaves that is equal to the difference between the two frequencies played in each ear. Using this method, Holosync claims to be able to entrain your brainwaves, moving them down to the relaxing Theta and Delta levels.

Brain synchronization and Holosync, part 2

March 30, 2008 – 12:35 am

Holosync provides a number of testimonials from happy users on their website. Reading through meditation forums on the internet, many satisfied customers can be found as well. A study carried out at the Centerpointe Research Institute on people using Holosync audio technology showed on average 43.77% increases in DHEA(a buffer against stress hormones, and a key determinant of physiological age and resistance to disease), 46.47% reduction in cortisol(a stress hormone), and 97.77% increase in melatonin(a hormone that helps restful sleep). The claims of improved brain functioning are difficult to measure, but hundreds of testimonials on their website seem to believe it.

Brain synchronization and Holosync, part 1

March 30, 2008 – 12:21 am

Brain synchronization, sometimes called brain entrainment, is the tendency of the brain to naturally change its brainwave (EEG) frequency to match the frequency of the dominant external stimuli. Lower brain frequencies, specifically the Theta and Delta states, which are commonly associated with meditation, deep relaxation, and REM sleep. When the brain is in these two relaxed states, it eliminates stress hormones such as cortisol and causes the production of beneficial hormones such as DHEA and melatonin. The most effective way to do this currently is through binaural beats, two different beat frequencies played in each ear in order to entrain a third frequency in the brain. Brainwave synchronization is not a new invention by any means. Drum circles, chanting, and prayer all can cause this effect, as well as some types of music.
